The Adventure You and your family will enjoy the experience of navigating mountain tracks with names such as "Jockstrap Pass" and "God Help Me Pass" which sit at an average height of over 2 500m above sea level. Join us on our self-drive trip in Western Lesotho. Not only is this one of the most scenic parts of Southern Africa, but the cultural and historic secrets that you will discover will intrigue you. You will gain an appreciation of this beautiful little country in the sky with its friendly people that are the protectors for most of South Africa's fresh water. This is a wonderful adventure for all types of 4-wheel drive vehicles and offers excitement for the whole family.
The Team As we will be making use of formal accommodation and there will be no camping or cooking in the field, the crew will consist of only your tour leader and his assistant, who will provide you with tasty picnic lunches and assist where and whenever necessary. Your tour leader is an experienced nature conservationist and adventure guide. He will be in radio contact with you at all times and impart a wealth of biological, cultural, historic and 4-wheel drive safety knowledge. Adventure itinerary
Day 1: We meet in the late afternoon at one of the oldest trading posts in Lesotho in the little town of Roma, only a short drive from Maseru. We will supply you with detailed information on how to enter the border post and get to the Roma Trading Post Guest House. Our accommodation for the night is at the guest house (all rooms with en suite bathrooms). We get to meet our hosts whose family have been trading in Lesotho for 7 generations. After a meet and greet before dinner and a briefing on the programme, the scene is set for the next few days of exciting adventure.
Day 2:
After an English style breakfast, we head off on the first cultural experience in a trip down memory lane. Our first stop is Thaba Bosiu, the natural fortress on which King Moshoeshoe established the Basotho nation. As we get to walk up the mountain on foot (an easy 20 minute walk), we will experience what all other raiding nations - the Zulu, the Boers, the British and many mercenaries - tried and failed to do. On the mountain top, we get to visit the graves of all the great kings, royalties and clergymen of the country. We leave this historic mountain to visit a Bushman painting site and make our way to the Kome Caves where people have been living since the 1800's, also hiding from the various raiding nations that plagued the country. We enjoy a light lunch en route, before returning back to Roma and our guest house accommodation. Before dinner we do another short 4X4 route to enjoy a sundowner overlooking the beautiful countryside and inspecting, at close range, some massive dinosaur footprints left in ancient rocks.
Day 3: We pack up after breakfast and head out over the 'God Help Me' Pass. Our destination for the day is the Ramabanta Trading Post Lodge, our home for the next two days. Once again we enjoy the privilege of the expertise of a local guide who will join us for the day. Our 4X4 route takes us into a quiet, pristine, unknown valley that will have trout fishermen salivating and photographers filling memory cards. We stop for lunch en route. The Ramabanta Trading Post Lodge also has en suite bathrooms, a cash bar and excellent cuisine. Day 4: We do not need to pack up after breakfast as we will be returning in the late evening to the Lodge. We however saddle our 4X4's and, like Basotho ponies, trek up into the heavens. Our destination for lunch is the awe inspiring Maletsunyane Falls. At a height of almost 200m, this is the highest single drop waterfall in Southern Africa and this will probably provide you with the most scenic lunch you will ever have. We head back to the Lodge and really saddle up some mountain ponies for an easy afternoon pony trek in the Ramabanta area. After a long day, we enjoy a cold beer and a warm supper.
Day 5: Sadly, after breakfast, we have to say our goodbye's until our next adventure together into Southern Africa. We will escort you to within half an hour's drive of the Maseru border post, leaving everyone with enough time to make Gauteng on the same day.
