The Knysna forests conjure images from Dalene Matthee's well-read stories, phantom elephants, Italian settlers and lost travellers. Bhejane 4X4 Adventures have recently obtained permission to explore this forest realm of giant yellowwoods and ancient lichens. This highly protected ecosystem, that holds many secrets, has been off-limits to anybody, other than those prepared to tackle the forest paths on foot or by mountain bike. We invite you to join us on a professionally guided 4X4 self-drive exploration of the Knysna forests to unlock some of the forest's best kept secrets.
Meet your Bhejane guide at the Sasol Garage at Harkerville on the N2 between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. After a meet and greet, safety briefing and distribution of two-way radios, we are on our way. Our route takes us into the Diepwalle Forestry section, the area where the Knysna elephants are believed to frequent the most. Please note that this route is off limits to anyone other than SANParks and forestry vehicles. Our journey continues through tunnels of yellowwoods, Cape Chestnuts, Stinkwoods and bracken ferns as the guides share their wealth of knowledge with you. Discover the intricacies of these forests, the lichens, fungi and pristine streams.
Much of the intrigue of these forests lies in their history, from the early Italian settlers to elephant hunters and timber harvesters. More current anomalies include the 7-year disappearance of a helicopter, recently discovered.
En route we stop at one of the Fynbos islands and enjoy a cup of tea/coffee and admire the magnificent views and calls of the forest.
Before lunch we visit the new SANParks' Legends of the Forest Museum. Included in the day trip is a traditional meal prepared by caterers from a local community at the Diepvalle Forestry Station.
Our trip ends after lunch at the Diepvalle Forestry Station. It is an easy 30km drive back to Knysna on a good gravel road.
